ANTI-KNIFE campaigners are planning a march through Colchester town centre.

Thousands of people are expected to join a peaceful weapon awareness demonstration.

John Rigby, a worried parent and concerned resident from Colchester, is organising the event with the support of Caroline Shearer whose son, Jay Whiston, was stabbed to death in Colchester last year.

Mr Rigby said: “I feel really sorry for Caroline and thought this was something I could do to help.

“There could be thousands of people coming because things have to change.

“I have an 11-year-old and I am worried for him. In the last couple of years things seem to have got a lot worse with people carrying and using knives.

“It is ridiculous what is happening and if I can do something to help I will.”

The march is provisionally planned for Saturday, May 11, with organisers trying to put in place all the arrangements necessary.

People should be taught the beauty behind a true blade and realise that they are not for stabbings. I have a fair few sharp items and alas not once has then thought crossed my mind to insert it into someone
