Standards assistant sought for council

ASSISTANTS are being sought to help push up standards within Colchester Council.

The authority is looking to appoint two, unpaid, independent persons to assist the work of its standard’s committee.

Candidates must have analytical minds, tactful with good interpersonal skills and able to make clear and reasoned decisions.

They will be appointed for a four year term and would ideally have a respected profile within the community he deadline for applications is March 22, 2013.

For more information contact Andrew Weavers, the council’s monitoring officer on 01206 282213, Andrew.weavers@colchester.gov.uk or visit www.colchester.gov.uk

Two unpaid assistants with brains to do the work of the clueless and over paid layabouts they already possess, well done CC another winner.

Yes, this does seem odd. If people are needed to assist with standards, then what is the current standards committee up to and why are they being paid?

The best candidates for this sort of work might well be unavailable - due to their own work committments and demands for their time/skills.

Would their input result in material change, or would they be brought in as a cheaop way of justifying that which is already in place though?

Ultimately, despite any reservations that I may have, I genuinely do hope that the council do appoint two quality, and (most importantly) independent people, and that it does result in change.

Here's hoping then.

Oops should say "... a cheap way of justifying ..."

Who is going to commit 4 years to unpaid work checking up on the standards of the paid workers? I suppose a need for tact is so that they don't upset anyone if they do spot something that needs improving.

It's the law - there have to be independent members on the Standards Committee and presumably 2 of them have served their term and have to be replaced, Admittedly the Gazette didn't exactly make it clear.

I know someone who would be interester in the job Assuming of course that it comes with an expense account ;)

Working free of charge sounds like doing a real working person out of a job. As bad as crossing a picket line.
.
But sandgronun and the Stinker are right, the real question is whether these "assistants" can get the paid or elected persons to do their bidding.
.
If Rginald is right, and two people are stepping down, I would like to hear from them what their experience has been.

Surely these are jobs for Cllrs. Julie and Tim Young as they seem to be on every other committee other than the conclave!
