Bus station 'not fit for purpose'

The new bus station in Osborne Street. The new bus station in Osborne Street.

ELDERLY passengers ‘could wet themselves’ if toilets at the new bus station are not opened longer.

That was the stark warning from a council committee who described the facility as “not fit for purpose”.

Operator First Buses also said the company had to work with what it had.

Members of Colchester Council’s Strategic Overview and Scrutiny Panel were scathing of the bus station in Osborne Street, which opened in November, particularly of toilets which did not stay open in the evenings.

What councillors making scathing comments about the new bus station? That won't please reginald47 or The Captain. Whatever next!

Well ... imagine that.

A point of correction in respect of this story if I may.

It is not a bus station, it is a STREET!

Oh and ... many of us already knew that it wasn't fit for purpose.

Recent comments (in threads like this one) however, from council supporting 'Trolls', suggest that this is part of a 'carefully' planned strategy - one that goes something like:

1 Come up with a crackpot idea

2 Consult the local populace, and even if little support (and overwhelming opposition) emerges ignore this anyway

3 Go ahead and build it anyway ... whatever it costs

4 If it goes wrong pretend that it hasn't for a while and ...

5/1 Distract attention by coming up with a new crackpot idea ... and so on ... you get the picture.

And, cue the Trolls' response

No one was consulted. Plans were published and unrealistic bus trials done at the football stadium. I cannot remember any councillor protesting. They all said it was regretful the bus station had to close but the new "bus station" would meet all needs.
.
None of the public supported it even before it was built. Protests were ignored from the public, disabled, taxi drivers and bus operators.
.
I do not believe the quoted £2million. Based on usual council overspending for "essential alterations and repairs" it would probably double that.
.
Public money was wasted , but only as elections approach are councillors critical of the new "bus station" and naturally deny all responsibility.

A station is where something or someone stands, therefore it is, by dictionary term, a station. However, why does Colchester need a station anyway? Are people unhappy with this stop/station because it hasn't got the facilities of some others? I cannot see the problem with it myself. Why do people want a bus to stay longer than necessary, they arrive, pick up & drop off then go again. Just because the buses don't 'park up' for a while it doesn't make it useless. As far as toilet facilities go, most 'older' people using it should make use of the other toilets around town in that case. If they are leaving the bingo hall then make sure they go before they leave!

We have the biggest and best Gala Bingo smoking shelter in the UK. Let's focus on the positives here.

Admittedly, a few old people may wet themselves.

But urinating in public is something that Colchester is now famous for thanks to our nationally renowned 'Nightlife Culture'.

People of all ages should be free to p**s in public.

Can we have some facts please, what are the toilet opening hours? what were they at the old station?

Presumably then just like the High Street Bus Station, the Queen Street Bus Station, the Hythe Tesco Bus Station?

Need I go on?

It is a street.

What if a younger person were to need the use of the toilet. They might wet themselves? Why all the fuss about old people wetting themselves. Where did they go to the toilet before this load of rubbish was built?
