Plans backed for new Colchester housing estate
3:00pm Wednesday 6th March 2013 in News
Developer Lands Improvement wants to build more than 200 homes on the site of the former Betts factory site, in Ipswich Road.
PLANS to build a new housing estate in Colchester have been marked for approval.
Developer Lands Improvement wants to build more than 200 homes on the site of the former Betts factory site, in Ipswich Road.
The site is unique because it lies partly in Colchester and partly in Tendring, so an application has been submitted to each authority.
Land in Colchester will be used to build up to 128 homes, while there will be 73 in Tendring.
Colchester officers recommend granting permission in principle to build the homes, which would be up to three-storeys, and a 65-bedroom residential care home.
Officers also recommend full planning permission should be given to completely demolish the existing factory and build a bus turning area and a main estate entrance.
An agreement brokered between Colchester Council and the developer means 20 per cent of homes would have to be set aside as affordable housing.
Colchester Council is set to decide on the application next Thursday, March 14, while the Tendring application is set to go to planning committee on March 27.

at least the immigrants pay their way, watch as most of them will be brought by councils in London to get rid of their tenants, come on Colchester, get a grip why not build half the houses and make them of a decent size with proper gardens that aren't all on top of each other, in about ten years the estates around myland/highwoods will be seen a lot worse than so called rough estates of today, at least they have a bit of space and greenery etc

Surely the first person to object to these houses will be the MP Sir Bob Russell. He has gone on record saying that there should not be a KFC in Ipswich Road because of the traffic conjestion on a very busy road. . There will be even more conjestion from 200 homes than there will ever be than one KFC shop.
So, for those that want the full story of just what is being applied for,

Besides, the might be luxury and unaffordable for most.
My only objection, and it is far more relevant, is why planning keeps being granted for housing but not for schools, kfc's, shops, and nightlife. If the town is allowed to grow, but grown in proportion then the town will improve.

200 houses on the former betts land is not a bad thing. If it houses people, be it foreign, London or local folk, everyone needs a roof right????

A new Primary school is being built opposite the barracks estate on Mersea Road. So it does happen. Sometimes.

However the money to build them certainly is.

Nobody with any sense would want to build shops in present climate unless it's a big out of town development. As for KFC's put them beside Service Stations on the A12.

It is important to have a balanced infrastructure. Take Ipswich for example. They built a new estate on the airfield, put a school, chemist, fast food, local shop, surgery and still had enough time, money and effort to give the children a play area and field.
I am pro colchester growing in population. The town needs it. But it needs to grow together and not just its population.
Lastly, using Ipswich as an example again. It pains me too, simply because it is not really a good place, but look at their development at the quay. Compare it to colchester. I know we have student accommodation hence the cheap small apartments and domino pizza, but Ipswich put a row of plush restaurants along the front with some luxury apartments. Some shops too. Don't be fooled into thinking building shops is a bad idea. It would bring people in that's for sure.

What a win win result for Tendring. Houses are built on "their" land which will mainly use the services of Colchester and not theirs however, they will still receive the council tax.

The problem is that they council need to invest more into this area before they even contemplate adding more work otherwise it will be in an even worse state of affairs than it already is.
When will this council learn to stop spending what they dont have or when to use resources properly.
I think I should run the council lol

Therefore, we had to return to the very old method of getting away for two or three days. The daily “Excursion” which allowed you to book a return ticket. We had now returned to the 1930s/40s and 50s method of travelling with the 1990s prices. These prices soon escalated so instead of six or seven short breaks we have had to now safe up for two trips per year. Now we read some statement about “Affordable Housing” being built. First, affordable housing is what someone can purchase with ease.
If they lose their means of income through no fault of their own (surplus to requirement) being the going phrase. How do they continue to reside in their affordable purchase home?
These phrases are some politicians’ way of trying to justify their existence. Pretending to be concerned at what happens to those who have been made homeless through allowing Europeans to enter the UK work for peanuts, and live of our benefits system. While totally, ignoring what is happening to the indigenous population.

it seems the TDC residents who used to shop in your town have checked out and are shopping elesewhere.
your thoughts and wishes have increased the closure of your towns struggling trading zones even more.
Its Inward thinking like yours that Colchester does not need.
TDC residents seem to be busy most days now spending there money within TDC`s remit.
Only yesterday, my dear wife & daughter spoke of driving into colchester one day soon to do some shopping.
I reminded them of the future closures of High Street roads, and the fact of the only shop in colchester towns appeal for myself has now closed, except its one or two fast food outlets.
RIP jacks.
CBC has/is denighing current and future shoppers access slowly by stealth, until one day it will implode within its self.

The idea that our bus station (when we had one) was only for the use of locals was obviously false. The whole point of a bus station is that you change buses there. This means that you have come from out of town, or you are going to somewhere out of town.
And if Colchester makes it difficult for people to do that, then they will stop coming here to spend their money, just like your two dear ladies.
We have to make our town attractive to people, whether they come from Clacton, or Romford, or Kalamazoo, or Tegucigalpa. And their requirements are not necessarily the same as ours. This is what the boneheads running past and present CBC cabinets have never understood.

Still the more houses and buisness property's that go up the more council tax which means the more public money to waste???
Once we had houses built to the Parker Morris space standards. This under the Thatcher Administration became defunct.
Parker Morris laid out what size habitable room must be. Furthermore, on how much land had to be allocated to each property. Many properties that belonged to the Council were designed to these recommended standards. Only being familiar with one area of Colchester that had these types of residential buildings for residents free from a military career. Was the Wilson Marriage Road area, I am not sure what the estate was known has. During my military service, I had some very good friends who actually lived on that estate.
Now with the Parker Morris regulation, not having to be adhered too we have houses built which have gardens of open plan, bedrooms of sizes that are about three quarters the size of our old housing properties. If developers are allowed to carry on building for profit. They will have us back to terraced rows with a back yard not bath, and an outside privy.

such a shame that, as you should really be proud of something in your life.
So, factually, I did use the bus station from time to time, but alas only on my way through to onwards travel to the city of london.
I am not proud, but do possess a reduced cost coach travel card due to my age.
I also feel the need to share with you that I own a "car"
I will also share a secret that I also own a traditional Vespa motor scooter,
thus, not being stuck for my personal needs at any one given time.
Can I also share with you the fact of my enjoying my coach travel at times,
and even my free bus and minibus travel provided by a ECC grant aid funded scheme where we free bus pass users can travel into most areas and hospitals within Colchester,
then return pre booked free of charge also.
It seems us coastal dwellers are more mobile enabled than "some" of you and your fellow CBC residents,
we being free to spend our pennies & pounds as we wish,
and not just within TDC and its local regions.
Treat this as your personal Information, as I would hate it ever got out the freedom we Indulge in my Tendring District.

The traffic is diabolical, has anyone been to ASDA on a Saturday? Brook Street between 4.30 - 6pm? Cowdray Avenue? Ipswich Road? The Hythe? Seriously, this town is fast becoming a joke! I've lived here all my life and I want to leave! Crime is higher, schools and the hospital are struggling!
Can't the money set aside be used for more constructive issues, such as extending the hospital or as previous posts mention, building more schools?
Even repairing the potholes in the roads would help!
What's happening with old swimming pool on Abbeyfields? The site is big enough for a school. It appears CBC are all for making money but helping the old residents of the town is way down the list of priorities.
