Hospital boss: "Colchester General is safer now than ever - but we can always improve"
THE CHIEF executive of Colchester’s hospitals insists they are safer now then ever before.
Dr Gordon Coutts, who was appointed in September 2010, said will welcome an NHS inspection and act upon any recommendations it makes.
Speaking to the Gazette, he said: “I understand why the Department of Health would want to leave no stone unturned.
“I am confident this hospital is safer now than it ever has been but we can always improve."

.
Safe from neglect? Safe from dying unnecessarily? Safe from humiliation?
.
Safe from discomfort? Safe from sleepless nights in a noisy environment? Safe from being ignored by nurses?
.
We need some definitions and some evidence of constructive staff development and backup.
.
This applies to all hospitals, not Colchester in particular.

A very sad and shameful situation indeed, for the Borough and the community, This is negative publicity we could well all do without:
After the Channel 4 programme on Colchester Night-Life now this.
This is all quite unfortunate and inappropriate for Colchester

On other threads connected with this issue, we have seen plenty of tales of people not being looked after especially well. I have seen examples of very good care, but also, while visiting people, have seen (elderly) people waiting a long time for any response to an alarm call. The impression I got was that if you were able to shout, you´d get the attention first. If you were old and tired, and couldn´t do that, you could wait a long time.
The management are paid very nice salaries indeed, and that puts the responsibility on them to properly put this right. Flippant statements that everything is just fine do not fool the public any more.

Still, if the head of the Staffordshire trust thinks that he shouldn't resign because he's the best person to sort out any issues, why would you expect Coutts to do any different?

Those that run the NHS are out of contact with the real world. The only thing they understand is money. They don't understand what a hospital is.
The whole NHS needs a real shake up. They need to put the sick first, giving the care that is needed.
I do understand the thought behind saving money. But the saving of care and empathy too is just stupid.
Would love to see this Dr Gordon Coutts go into the Wivenhoe ward incognito and see what a ward of death that is. To see first hand that Wivenhoe and Brightlingsea wards are ran by nurses that think they know more than the doctors.
