Suspected shotguns were lumps of wood

POLICE were called to reports of a man armed with shotguns in Queen Street, Colchester.
 

Concerns were raised at about 3pm today with rumours of an armed man in the town centre spreading.


Police tracked down the suspect in a car but found the shotguns were acutally two lumps of wood.
 

It is being treated as a mistaken call with good intent.

Several years ago, police in London shot and killed a man carrying a bag which someone had reported as probably containing a gun. It turned out to be a table leg.
It's a relief to know that our coppers are not so trigger-happy.
