AN IRON Age burial site dating back 2,000 years has been uncovered beneath a Lexden golf club.

The discovery was made during work at PlayGolf Colchester, in Bakers Lane, on a new £1 million clubhouse development.

Members of the Colchester Archaeological Trust have hailed the find - which dates back to circa 1-50 AD - as important because it could help develop the history of Colchester.

This is a fantastic discovery as so much of our Iron Age heritage must have already been destroyed by quarrying in that area. We must have so much more to discover about the period in history that led to the Roman invasion of Britain.
