Tesco Hythe dumps trolley security
2:00pm Wednesday 30th January 2013 in News
Trolleys collected in nearby B&Q car park
A SUPERMARKET has dumped a £100,000 decision aimed at stopping students swiping trolleys.
Tesco, on Greenstead Road, Colchester, has reverted back to standard trolleys.
It comes only a year after the company spent the money introducing coin-locked trolleys to the store.
The supermarket giant previously revealed it had been spending £3,000 a week to replace those taken from its store.
Tesco said it had reversed the decision because customers had complained they never had the correct change.

Guess that'll be the students who don't carry change only plastic....If Tescos have got the money for long drawn out planning appeals maybe they should use some to prosecute the University as their students take the trolleys and don't return them (theft...). The University then might be forced to take responsibility for their actions rather than just taking from Colchester and putting nothing back in return.
Fine if Tesco want to press charges against the students, but the University can't be held responsible for the actions of the ADULTS that are doing this.

Actually, the largest Tesco has one of those systems that lock the wheels when the trolley is a certain distance from the store, which effectively stops the trolleys dead at the beginning of the footpath that leads to the main road.
.
A vast number of pensioners and social housing tenants use this store, and I have never heard anyone complain about not having change for the trolley. Customers do help each other out with pound coins from time to time, but very many now have the "tokens" that can be used in place of £1 coins.
.
Frankly, I'm amazed that the poor old cash-strapped students can find the money to fill more than a hand- basket, anyway.

Can't help but think the reason tesco have reversed their decision is a decrease in profits due to people buying less. Besides, a walk across campus just showed people working together to get their deposits back leaving the trolleys in harder to return states on campus.

In any case, all they had to do was sacrifice one pound for the first trolley, then you can get the pound back on all subsequent ones. Maybe this was done already, I´m sure somebody worked it out pretty quickly.
One consequence of the charge is that people no longer leave their trolleys all over the place in the car park, as they used to.

I didn't make any comment that the students had been drinking, but historically I think, if memory serves me right, the reason why the trolleys were introduced in the first place was because the university wanted to charge tescos to return the trolleys which its students had stolen, and the university by having the trolleys on its property knowing they belonged to someone else is surely in possession of stolen goods. The University should be forced to take some responsibility this time and either make their students return the trolleys to the store or return them foc back to Tescos.

Like it was said, Go down Elmstead Road or go down towards B&Q. Nothing but student flats down there, but there are loads of trolleys that have been taken from the store.
The amount of times I have been driving around there and not been able to stop and tell these mindless morons that think they are smarter than the rest in the world. That they should not be taking the trolley away from the store. They could get a taxi from there.
Don't want to hear stupid excuse that they can't afford too. For if you look at their shopping. It is not cheap stuff in there, but full of top of the range shopping. Not to mention the amount of alcohol they have.
And people say that students are the real people of tomorrow.
I say they are the most stupid morons that need further education.

We are fully behind Tesco's they have tried so many different angles to stop these lazy students stealing trolleys. They fitted a stopper on the trolleys that stop them from being pushed a certain distance but the students got round this by lifting up the trolley and pushing it on the front wheels! Then they complain and whinge they have no change for one when Tesco instigate coin operated ones!! We see lazy students all the time sometimes with just two bags pushing a trolley to the uni. then when Tesco try's to get them back the uni refuses saying the trolleys are on private property and Tesco has to pay them to get their own property back. Glad this has hit the press as certain idiots mainly Boris refused to believe this was happening and called my husband and I liars. Well the truth is here in black and white!!!

Those who use trolleys to take shopping home, probably have no car and do not want to spare what little money they have on a bus, when they can walk for free, I use to do it and it caused no harm.

Presuming that you've put the "always" in for dramatic effect, and you don't think that students are stealing 24/7, the number of adults who have been through the courts for exactly that kind of proves you wrong early on, doesn't it?
"when Tesco try's to get them back the uni refuses saying the trolleys are on private property and Tesco has to pay them to get their own property back."
Tesco used to collect them and there was no problem, the problem is with the university refuses to have a member of staff round up the trolleys and deliver them back on a regular basis. That's not in this article, but it was mentioned on this site quite a while back.
Fact is, this happens everywhere, it's even common in my hometown where there is no university for 30 miles. At the end of the day the people who take trolleys to take shopping home, should carry things where possible, but if they do push their items home then they should take them back afterwards, not abandon them. Your apparent strong hatred of people in education doesn't really play into that, and it's certainly not as "black and white" as you imply.

An easy way to solve this. You should have to register for a trolley. This includes providing a photo of yourself, finger prints and iris scan. When you get to the supermaket the trolley scans your eye and releases it. As you use the trolley a picture of your face appears on mini lcd screens around the sides of the trolley (which also can be used for advertising). So when you return it and lock it in position the trolley rescans your iris and your picture disappears, if not you stay on there until your arrest for theft or the batteries run out. I claim this product here and now and if anybody creates it I am entitled to 20% royalties for supplying the idea.
think you have been watching far to many sci fi movies.
you go shopping at a big store,
you use there trollies, simples.
you dont need MI5 to help you use the free to use shopping trolley do you..
nice Idea, but too futuristic.

i live on avon way and watch students just dump these trolleys randomly they never return them its frustrating as i have never removed a trolley from any supermarket so what makes these students the exception plus is there a reward for name and shame as i also walk my dog around the uni grounds and see numerous trolleys being pushed with no shopping but moving there personal belongings if there was a reward i would photograph these students in the act daily and photo all the trolleys dumped around there high rise digs ( sssssshhhhhh the uni denies this )

I did help to expose you and your husband as xenophobic racists, but that was to do with another story.
.
Anyway, how about this for a solution to the missing trolleys problem? For each trolley found outside the supermarket's premises, fine it £100. That should ensure that they post someone at the exit to stop people wheeling them away.

I work on the Hythe and the trolleys are taken by all kinds of people not just the students and with out condoning what they do even then the number taken in relation to the total stock of trolleys is tiny.
The university refused to use their staff to round up and return the trolleys which is quite right if tesco want them back they have the resources at their disposal to arrange collection or to implement a fail safe way of preventing the trolleys being taken off site.
I must confess I'm surprised that Mr and Mrs Harrisson aren't blaming it all in migrant workers they seems to be their token excuse for everything.
