County councillors up for achievement gongs

THREE county councillors are in the running for awards by a local government think-tank.
Peter Martin, leader of Essex County Council, has been nominated for a Judges’ Special Award for his long-standing commitment to the authority.
The gong is part of the C’llr Achievement Awards 2013 from the Local Government Information Unit think-tank.
Also up for awards are Stephen Castle, councillor responsible for education, lifelong learning and the 2012 Games who has been nominated for Partnership Achievement of the Year, while Thundersley councillor Bill Dick could win a Scrutineer of the Year award.
Judges will now whittle down the shortlist to pick the winners, who will be announced at a ceremony on February 25.

Why should these people get awards for doing their jobs ! There are thousands of people doing great things for communities and charities who are unpaid and whose reward is the satisfaction of the work they do.

The winner of this category will be awarded a £10k bursary, funded by Kent, Essex and East Sussex County Councils, to complete a project to promote the case for localism and government at a local level. "

Actually there is one councillor who deserves an award. This man was invited to lunch several years ago by the then leader of Essex CC, who put in an expense claim for £70 x 2 = £140. After the revelations about expenses, for which ECC did not pursue the disgraced former council leader, the councillor repaid the £140, not wanting it to remain on record that he was a beneficiary of Mr White's largesse with our money.
Regrettably I don't remember the name of this councillor, but it was in the news a few months ago, and it was a good gesture.
