A man has died after being hit by a train near Witham station.

Bristish Transport Police said the man was struck by the London Liverpool Street to Norwich service close to the Motts Lane crossing at about 5.40pm last night.

A spokesman said: “Officers from BTP and Essex Police attended the incident, which was reported to BTP at 5.41pm and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

"Medics from the East of England Ambulance Service also attended but the man, who is believed to be 30 and from Witham, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesman said a local response doctor, ambulance crew, response car and officer were sent to the scene.

He added: “Our thoughts are with the family of the person involved at this tragic time.”

British Transport Police handed the line back to Network Rail at 6.25pm, but the incident caused long delays.

A rail replacement bus service was put in place between Witham and Colchester.
