Tablet 'precipitated' 'Nil By Mouth' patient's death

AN inquest has heard how a patient died after he was given a tablet by a nurse while in hospital even though a sign on the wall by his bed stated 'nil by mouth'.

Norman Betchley was a patient in Colchester General Hospital when an agency nurse gave him the tablet.

Coroner Tina Harrington, who conducted Mr Betchley's inquest today, said although Mr Betchley's overall physical condition was "sufficient to cause death at any point", on balance, Mr Betchley being given the tablet would have precipitated to his death.

Please do not tell me this poor man was on the Wivenhoe or Brightlingsea ward there. Them are the wards where nurses think they know better than the patients or the doctors.
