A MUM-OF-TWO has spoken out after finding a needle dumped behind her Colchester home.

The Greenstead resident said she was angry and upset to find the drug paraphernalia close to the bins in a communal area at the rear of her flats.

Her child, aged four, spotted the syringe when returning from a trip out and said “Mummy there’s an injection on the floor”.

Colchester Council zone wardens went to clear the needle from Syringa Court, Blackthorn Avenue, within an hour of being told of the problem on Friday.

She must be mistaken I'm sure PROOFREADER will be along shortly to explain that Greenstead is a drug free utopia and that it's more likely that the needle was carried there on the back of a hedgehog travelling across town.

It was only one needle. Greenstead is not littered with them. I lived in Barnhall and used to see them regularly on the pavements and along the footpath that led to Mersea Road. Newcastle Avenue on Westlands , Lexden also had a problem with needles being left in the street. Try walking round some of the rough areas such as Monkwick and you may see a few needles lying around.

No, it doesn't but there are other parts of Colchester where the situation is far worse and something needs to be done. Our local councillors in Greenstead have worked hard over the years to rid the area of drug addicts. The Gazette and Essex County standard give Greenstead a bad name by not keeping things in perspective and reporting on such things happening in other parts of Colchester.

Don't know what proof readers problem is! Open your eyes!!! Greenstead is just one big rubbish tip. We lived there for years and all you see is dog muck, litter, drug paraphernalia and even used diapers. And this is the estate that just supposedly got a tidy award! Well that just goes to show what liars they are! We were glad to get off the estate. Yes there may well be other parts of Colchester that have problems but Greenstead has been like this for years and we doubt we will see it improve. Those of us that have lived there know full well what a mess it is.

There is just one point that all you might consider: it is often quiet areas out of sight of the main road and any chance of police patrols etc, that are the chosen rendezvous for drug sellers and their clients.

I would hazard a guess that some of the clients are so desperate that they get their fix in the nearest quiet spot out of sight, and then drop the equipment and hotfoot it to their own area.

The above mentioned quiet areas are so often nothing to do with drugs or any other unpleasant aspects of modern day life, but just quiet backwaters where ordinary people are getting on with their lives. That's why the dealers choose to bring their goods in there. The clients will be walking up and down, ever more desperate, phoning ceaselessly on their mobiles until a car drives in, swift deals are done, and the dealer's away.
.
Until/unless you are a dealer or a client, don't jump to any conclusions about "drug zones".

To think that Greenstead has a tidy award. Now I can point out a number of crack houses on that estate. Can point out garbage that is there on the ground.
I just don't get how they could come up with this fantasy award for Greenstead being so tidy.

What is really needed is that the police get out more on the streets and less sitting down there in the office doing paper work or eating ice cream, whilst parked where they shouldn't.

No wonder they say that crime figures are down. The cops just can't be bothered to get out and take action. To protect and to serve. Think they have to fill in loads of paper work for picking their nose.

Remember having to call the cops once, using the 999 system. Had to wait 40 mins for them to respond.
Needs to be a big shake up on policing and council policies to tackle this anti social antics

Syringa means Lilac. Maybe when trhey named all those buildings and roads after shrubs, they thought syringa sounded more exotic. Anyway if it gives a thrill to a few people, it is a good name, and they will never change it now.

Again, too many people quick to judge pro and against greenstead.

The truth is, any estate or road can have needles.
I live in a main road and had a needle outside my house for a week. The council never done anything about it. It probably came from a local nursing home.

Proof is, if you moan hard enough, and live in greenstead, it will get published.

I agree with super waluigi! I guess it had to happen in the end.

I used to live in a place just like Greenstead, and it was amazing how people would describe it as a "hell-hole" and far worse. Quite often, you´d eventually find that they´d never even been there! A used needle is a bad thing to find, but it doesn´t mean the whole place is involved in drugs. Needles are found quite often, I am sure, but don´t always get reported, yet if it happens on Greenstead, there it is in the paper. And it should be in the paper - but then similar cases elsewhere should as well.

Greenstead is far from perfect, but also not the urban wasteland that some might believe.

That needle could have come from many sources, the assumption it was used for heroin seems to be based purely on the fact that it was found in Greenstead. I used to find needle in Hillyfields all the time, as did many people, yet one needle (maybe from a nurse, someone dropped, medicinal purposes, hell someone could have been using it to grow mushrooms) makes the paper. The story serves only to reinforce prejudice against Greenstead, nothing more. Do Gazette reporters actually go outside or just wait for any old crap email and slap it in the paper now?
