In today's Gazette: iPhoney! Fake gadgets warning

In today's Gazette: Fraudsters have set up a false website claiming to be a Colchester business and selling phones and consoles.

The spoof site allegedly took payments for iPhones and Xboxes but never sent out the goods.

* Students from across Britain will be converging on Colchester for a university challenge with a difference.

The academics will be attending the inter-university pole dancing competition. Essex University won the right to host the event after winning the overall championships last year.

* A major car rally has been cancelled after organisers were told they would be prosecuted if anything went wrong.

The founders of East Essex Cruizers had predicted up to 1,000 car fans would take part in the Colchester Takeover at Turner Rise retail park but the event has now been called off.

* A miracle baby, who could not breathe when he was born, has gone home thanks to specialist life-saving treatment.

Clayton-Jay was given brain-cooling treatment after being rushed to Addenbrookes Hospital. His proud mum Nicole Kingdon said: "I am so proud of what he has overcome."

The printed paper sets out the problem of the spoof business much more clearly. A warning to those who buy goods on line from new suppliers. Be prepared to lose your money.

You just have to be sensible online. Most people stick to the retailers they know, and most people know that if it looks to good to be true, it generally is. It's not hard to find out details about sites no matter how new and make your decision accordingly. Admittedly I've had a close call with a scammer (on ebay), but I came off better than I went in from that one, so I can't complain.
