In today's Gazette: Old police station's £2 million revamp

Colchester's former police station is set to be furned into a business centre for creative industries.
The building, which is now a bar, will be turned into a cafe with 22 studio spaces over two floors while the cells will be turned into meeting rooms under the £2 million revamp.
* The family of missing man Jamie Toomey have begged him to return home.
Dad-of-four Jamie, 45, of King's Parade, Holland-on-Sea, was last seen in Clacton on January 6.
* A troubled care home, which closed after concerns were raised over the treatment of residents, is up for sale.
Ashcroft Care Home in Eight Ash Green shut down after failing to meet four our of five standards of care. It is now on the market for £850,000.
* A supermarket chain is planning to open a third store in Colchester.
Iceland wants to take over the Fitness First premises at Turner Rise Retail Park. It already has stores at Tollgate and St John's Street, Colchester.

From what was quoted then this looks like another project that has doubled in cost.

I think CBC is onto something here, at least they are having the balls to go for it and try something new. I moaned about the recently annouced council tax rise, but primarily that is because CBC doesnt publicise its successes or plans well enough. I'm happy my 1.95% goes to something that
a) gets rid of a bar
b) helps clean up Queen Street
c) generates money for the local ecomony

If artists want to take over the old police station, let them find the money themselves and pay a commercial price for it. They do not need any public funding, of which they have had plenty already.

The Gazette need to get hold of the income projected from the 23 units from CBC.
I started the first 'Creative Business Centre' in Colchester in 1987 by purchasing a freehold building.
It turned out to be to be one of he most successful models of its kind in the UK - one of my tenants went on to employ many hundreds of people.
Thank God this was in the days before those stupid business award scheme things, we probably would have cleaned up at the time.
