Fresh plans for Drury Arms being drawn up

FRESH plans to turn a former Colchester pub into a Sainsbury’s convenience store could be submitted this spring.

A bid to convert the former Drury Arms, in Layer Road, and add storage areas was last year rejected by both Colchester Council’s planning officers and an independent planner.

The Grade II listed building can already be used as a small supermarket, but owner Property Portfolio wants to create extra storage area to allow for more shelf space inside the old pub.

Simon Allen, the company’s asset manager, said architects were drawing up fresh plans for less visually intrusive and smaller storage space.

The people that live nearby should have the most important views on this but I would have thought anything would be better than a derelict building which could be a magnet for antisocial behaviour.
