Maldon/Kelvedon: Man wanted in connection with racial abuse
10:51am Wednesday 9th January 2013 in News
Detectives from British Transport Police (BTP) are seeking to identify a man they would like to speak to in connection with an incident of racial abuse on an Essex bound train on Friday.
The man is thought to have left the service at Kelvedon.
Detective Constable Alan Reed, the investigating officer, explained: “The victim, a 50-year-old Eastern European woman from Maldon, boarded the 6.32pm service to Walton at Liverpool Street.
“A man sat opposite her suddenly began swearing loudly whilst having a conversation on his mobile phone.
“When the victim suggested the man stop swearing, he launched into a tirade of racist abuse towards the woman, which continued for 20 minutes.
“The man also made threats to other passengers on the train who were watching the incident.“
Officers have conducted several lines of enquiry, including reviewing CCTV footage and have since identified a man they believe has key information about the incident.
DC Reed continued: “This kind of behaviour is totally unacceptable and we are determined to find the person responsible.
“We would encourage anyone who recognises the man in the picture, or knows his whereabouts to get in touch. I would also like to appeal to anyone who was on the train at the time and witnessed the incident to come forward.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on Freefone 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference B7/LNA of 09/01/2013. Alternatively, call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111

Personally, sharing a carriage with people like this make me feel uncomfortable on the journey to and from work, whereas a fare-dodger isn't usually apparent. I don't think the small number of people paying not paying has an effect that equates to our annual fare increases, so that isn't really of concern to me, and I don't understand why it would be of more concern to you than racist attacks.
I don't think I'm likely to understand your viewpoint here though, as it sounds very messed up and backwards to me.

There have been a few cases recently of abuse being filmed and put on You Tube. It´s good that it sometimes catches the abusers, although I do wonder if it is normalising it a bit. I hope that if I ever saw it going on, I would step in and try to stop it. If nobody tries to do anything, the abuser thinks it is OK. But I do accept that you never know if somebody is carrying a knife. Bottom line: any abuse of this sort should not be tolerated.

I've no time at all for fare dodgers, but definitely don't think that people should just have to put up with aggressive bullies, which seemed to me to be the gist of the original post, before it descended into a rant!

I absolutely "have a clue" about you. You've just given it to me.

I almost totally disagree with the first posting here.
