In today's Gazette: £2 billion plan to fix the railway

In today's Gazette: Network Rail has unveiled its biggest investment for a century as it plans to revolutionise its railways.

The number of commuters getting the train to London is set to rocket by 49 per cent in 20 years prompting £2.2 billion of improvements in the next five years.

* Essex police officer April Casburn has explained why she was against the investigation in phone hacking.

Det Chief Insp Casburn, from Hatfield Peverel, told Southwark Crown Court she was managing the National Terrorist Financial Investigation Unit at the time and did not think resources should be diverted into the phone hacking probe.

* A distraught family are appealing for help to catch teh crooks who burgled their house and crashed their car.

Michael Herbert, 44, woke to find his home in Sutton Park Avenue, Colchester, had been ransacked and his VW Sharan had been stolen.

* A troubled Colchester restaurant has closed its doors for good and could be replaced by a bar.

Tony Cole, who opened Number Nine saying it would get Essex's first Michelin star, has now confirmed he has sold the lease.

So whilst they were renewing the cabling all the way to Colchester for the past god knows how many years, didn't someone at NR think about making the pylons taller in order to accomodate double decker trains like they have in Europe ? Theres a limit to the number of trains they can run during the peak times so the only way forward is going to be double decker trains.
