Street lamps worth £100k installed in Dovercourt High Street this week

DECORATIVE street lamps costing more than £100,000 will be installed this week as part of a town’s regeneration.

Twelve heritage lamp columns will be added to Dovercourt High Street following £102,000 of section 106 money agreed by Lidl supermarket after setting up in the town.

They will run from Station Road to Hordle Place on both sides of the road.
High Street will be closed from Kingsway to Station Road, Dovercourt, while the lamps are installed. There will also be no waiting allowed in part of these streets between 6am and 6pm.

Work was due to begin in December but after speaking to traders Tendring decided to wait until Monday, January 7, to avoid disruption to Christmas shopping.

Bad enough closing the High St. on Friday without this added obstruction of the main thoroughfare through the town. Avoid disrupting trade until after the holiday period? What about the rest of the year when trading is at an all time low? April 1st pranks would not be inane as this! Stick the lamp posts where the sun don't shine. Oh......they are!!!!

Will they be the same cast iron heritage street lights which "disappeared" from CBC's stores some time ago? Or will they be plastic imitations?
Either way, £100,000 sounds a lot of money for 12 street lights.

I don't believe this was just a Tory decision. They had to spend the money before a certain time or lose it and the whole council decided on this, it may have even been a town council decision.

also if it was a town council decision I think the town council has more Labour than Tory councillors on it so we can blame Labour for wasting money

Publish the vote and lets see who was to blame.

Is it just me? Why am I the only one to take something positive from this story?
Here we have a supermarket chain, and a town council adding a little bit of light to a rather dark and drab Harwich town. I suspect that most of the criticism
on here is from people who dont even live in the town.

It would appear it is just you! An out of town supermarket gives a "backhander" to enable it to build it's store to draw trade away from the town centre. Surprise, surprise the money is spent on lamps to illuminate the khazi the town has developed into since we were children growing up here! (And we still live here)! Charity shops, takeaways, estate agents, banks and craft shops. No butchers, food halls, department stores. Nowhere to view a selection of furniture, shoes, clothing, meat, the list goes on.The Co-op have sold out! Another out of town developement who undoubtably "oil" there progress. Need I say more?

The usual depressive drab comments from the negative minority that contribute to these columns. Top marks to the Town Council for abandoning politics and getting together as a group to use the funds that could have been lost, to actually do something to improve the town. I believe that this initiative is the first phase of planned improvements through Dovercourt Rediscovered.

we hear you swysee,
but is it not most towns you now describe, as most outside harwich are in the same position.
section 106 payments are better then nothing,
so be grateful the money was accepted, and be visibly spent in your town.

i'd personally love to see 106 money being put towards superfast broadband for the area :-)
it's fast becoming an essential ingredient in galvanising a local economy...

It would be great if S106 money could be used for projects such as broadband, but sadly it can't be. The money can only be used for "public realm" improvements, such as waste bins, paving, lampposts and the like. In this instance it is area specific, and can only be spent in the town centre. So despite all the cynical comments,it looks like the Town Council have spent it as wisely as they could.

Now we know why these lampposts are costing over £100,000. They have included the cost of the lost trade to local businesses in the final total plus the extra fuel used by the unfortunate motorists caught up in this farce. The "cynical" comments are the only way for people to air their views as TDC take no notice of the general public. Somebody is having a nice little earner out of this and it isn't the residents!

They are great lampposts. They have a really neat cross bar to sit on and are circular for easy climbing. Great for when the pubs turn out and the yobs need something to amuse themselves.
