Plans for Parkeston Home Bargains store

A DISCOUNT superstore will create scores of jobs and provide a retail complex with a new lease of life if plans are approved.

Plans by T J Morris to build a Home Bargains store next to the Harwich Gateway Retail Park, in Freshfields Road, Parkeston would create 45 jobs.

Tim Rainbird, the agent for T J Morris, said he hoped the development would attract more investment in the town.

He said: “It is an exciting development for the district especially in the current climate which has been very difficult for retailers.

“It’s a very positive sign for the town.

“This is a retailer who wants to trade in the district and that will promote and attract further investment to come forward – it gives everybody confidence."

But concerns have been raised over out-of-town retail units taking custom away from the high street.

Garry Calver, of Harwich Town Council, said: “Whilst all employment opportunities are welcome the big fear with this particular development is the increased risk to the foot-fall in the town centre.

“The high street’s confidence is fragile and any out-of-town development will be seen as a further threat to existing businesses.”

What sort of "very positive sign" for the town is yet another discounter? All it does is send a message to the bigger high street names that the town can't afford for them to bother coming here.

Harwich already has its fair share of discount retailers, both national and independent, so I would doubt that there is need for another one. Of course there is a need in every town for this type of shop, but not at the expense of everything else.

Excellent news, a Home Bargain store, but hope it won't encroach on the B & M Store too much, I m sure there is enough business for both of them. T J Morris get building, it could do with a few more shops down at the retail park. A few more clothes shops as well would be good and maybe a restaurant, its what this place needs.

there are major national retailers who want to come to the town, but there is no store big enough and also some people in the town dont want it.

we are committed to develop more retail and leisure for the town and also we would be interested in developing a new centre in the town near dovercourt station to the value of £20 million.

the centre could be named after the late col double. if property owners in the triangle which includes lloyds and boots, down to the station would talk to us
