Maldon's MP is set to oppose David Cameron’s controversial policy to make gay marriage legal.
Mr Whittingdale is among at least 303 MPs who have condemned the proposal to redefine the institution of marriage.
His opposition has been expressed in letters and emails sent to Maldon residents, who have contacted him with their own concerns about the Government’s plans for gay marriage, which could become law in a matter of months.
Mr Whittingdale said he could see no legal advantages to the marriage of same sex couples.
He said: “I supported the indication of civil partnerships because it brought with it various legal rights, such as inheritance.
“But gay marriage brings no legal rights with it, that has already been dealt with.”
