Bus crashes into scaffolding Bus crashes into scaffolding

A BUS has crashed into scaffolding in Colchester town centre.

The First double-decker service collided with scaffolding which surrounds a building on the corner of Head Street and St John's Street.

Head Street is partially blocked because of the accident and is adding to existing traffic delays in the area caused by emergency water main works at the bottom of Balkerne Hill.

PC Jo Jaggo, at the scene, said the current estimate was for the bus to be removed within the next hour once scaffolders had disentangled the bus.

Emegency water main works at the bottom of Balkerne Hill ? The burst water main was at the top on Southway.

It could have been the scaffolders fault?

Scaffolding looks close to edge of pavement with no real warning signs or lights on it. Having said that, no excuse for bus driver to be off the highway, unless the road camber has tilted back of the bus into overhanging scaffolding.

Stupidest thing is having buses going up and down St. Johns Street in both directions. I guess that's why this bus was forced to navigate this tight turn that is not really suitable for buses.

Why not send the bus up Head Street, High Street, Queen Street to get to Barton's Folly? Would also give passengers the chance to get off in the town centre itself if they wanted to rather than at Gala Bingo's £2m smoking shelter.

It could just be the angle of the camera or the lens but that scaffolding does look like its sticking out into the street rather dangerously!

The road does camber on this junction which I think has caused the bus to catch the scaffold and pull it into the road are buses now turning right into St Johns Street to access the towns state of the art bus station ? Who ever thought that was a good idea clearly hasn't a clue !

If work has to be done on that building, would you do it without scaffolding? That sounds pretty stupid, too.
What they should have done was cone off part of the road, but that would have interfered with the sacred traffic flow.
So they didn't, and they ended up with a much bigger problem.
No surprise there, then.

At least, I've never seen that happen yet. Have you?

Boris you are right buses are only going in one direction in St Johns Street ie going towards Head Street not coming from Head Street.

Are you all sure? That bus looks like it is turning right to me. Look at the angle of the front wheel in the picture. I guess the bus company can shed some light on it. I looked at the CBC leaflet. http://www.colcheste

The bus in the picture is on the corner of Head Street and the High Street and
was about to turn right into the High Street, St Johns Street is at the other end of Head Street!

I was incorrect the bus in on the corner of Headgate and St Johns Street, Buses in Colchester do not turn right down St Johns Street. They go along Head Street and either go down North Hill or turn right into the High Street.

The bus in the picture service 70 from Chelmsford turns right from Head Street into the High Street and stops at the stop outside Angel Court.

All buses and coaches enter the new bus station via St Botolphs Street.

And the scaffolding has been there for weeks, the bus was going straight on. I would say thats just careless driving.
