'Thames airport being used as a political football', says business group

AN Essex business group has raised concerns about how proposals to build an airport in the Thames Estuary have been treated by political parties.

Essex Federation of Small Businesses asked its members about the proposed airport’s impact on communities in the area, with many members saying the Government had not provided enough information on the plans.

Ken Wickham, Essex branch secretary, said: “We have seen the Thames Estuary Airport commented on in the media, and used as a political football by numerous politicians including the Mayor of London.

“At a time when the economy remains in crisis this sort of political gamesmanship is totally unacceptable and utterly reprehensible.”

He added: “It is clear that the United Kingdom must improve its aviation infrastructure, however we have yet to see the case made for an airport in the Thames Estuary.”

Other options available to the Government include increasing capacity at Heathrow and Stansted.

Essex would benefit because a bridge to the airport would make accessing Kent and the channel tunnel possible!

Billions in travel, trade, import and export would commence shortly followed by thousands of JOBS created from the business.

We need more capacity and competition to drive down flight prices and improve services from wealthy airline companies.

I really like the idea and we need to explore these benefits publicly to be fare!
