Rare bird mistakes Abberton for the Sahara

A HOT weather bird mistook sand being used for construction around Abberton Reservoir for the Sahara Desert.

Bird watchers have been flocking to the centre to catch a glimpse of the Desert Wheatear.

Experts say this is only the third time the bird has been spotted at Essex in 100 years.

The silly female was seen at the Essex Wildlife Trust Centre, at Abbotts Hall Farm, over the weekend, where it has made its temporary home having been redirected by strong easterly winds.

“It would have been migrating and it is likely from above it may have mistaken all the sand being used by Essex and Suffolk Water for a desert and landed there,” said Charlie Oliver, of the Essex Wildlife Trust.

Easy mistake to make.

Why is this female silly? A lot of us get lost without our satnavs, but that doesn't mean we are silly. And human females never get lost, for they don't mind asking the way. Avian females are probably similarly sensible.
And if this species has only been seen around here 3 times in the last 100 years, where was this one migrating from and to?
