New powers to prosecute for Essex Police

POLICE officers in Essex will be given greater powers to prosecute without involving the Crown Prosecution Service.
Officers will be able to take a string of new offences through the courts if the defendant admits the crime.
These include some criminal damage cases, driving without due care and attention and some alcohol and public order offences.
It is hoped the changes, introduced by the Home Office, will cut bureaucracy and speed up the court process.
It could mean police led prosecutions will make up more than half of the cases in magistrates’ courts - which themselves hear 98 per cent of call cases.
