A MAN has been handed an ASBO to prevent his frequent criminal behaviour.

Martin Lewis, 63, was handed the Anti Social Behaviour Order with five conditions at Colchester Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Police also released a picture of him to try and curb his prolific offending.

Under the order, Lewis, of Ayloffe Road, Colchester, must not be in possession of an open alcohol in a public place, except in licensed premises, or be found drunk in any public place in England or Wales.

He must not attempt to enter residential buildings, including sheds or garages belonging to people he does not know.

Lewis was also banned from staying at residences in Colchester Borough if asked to move on by police or community support officers.

The final condition stresses that he shall not expose himself in public.

I have known Martin fror many years. He has a troubled past and has clear mental illness. He will not change his ways. We must tolerate his behaviour, as the only alternative is to lock him away.

He may be mentally ill, but action has to be taken as he is foul and abusive to people, and quite threatening.

We need to see a return to life long 'pubic protection' sectioning. Imagine how much more pleasant our society would be if we built a load of red brick, neo victorian asylums and kept people like Lewis in a shetered environment. He could take part in life fufilling activities such as growing his own vegetables for the hospital kitchen and taking leisurely walks around the perimetre fence (tree lined off course)...

I know this guy, he kicked off at my Mums Wedding, refused to get out of photos and started letting air out all the car tyres, strange man. Though clearly mentally ill and in need of help not a punitive measure such as an asbo, his not a violent offender anyway, just troubled, poor guy.

He sounds normal to me.

When it comes to the exposure thing some of my friends and their kids were some of them being shouted abuse and sexual language at. These kids were all under the age of 8. Mentally ill or not, he is a threat to the public. Then again, I am sure that many criminals including sex offenders of sorts get lighter sentences because they are not mentally sound - To me that's all the more reason to keep these people in a more secure society where others don't have to suffer from his mental issues. This story also failed to mention he has been known to get violent on occassion with people on the estate.

I have also known of Martin Lewis for quite a few years now. He does have a troubled past and is clearly mentally unstable, which is why he should be being given help or taken into accomodation rather than being left to his own devices. He isn't ever going to change, infact, probably just get worse. But yes, his behaviour within the public is unacceptable & whether he is troubled or not, should know that it is wrong to expose himself to young children! There are many people in and around Colchester that know of Martin and are aware of what he is capable of, but to a child, he comes across very threatening and quite intimidating and scary. He did once follow me and my friend while shouting things at us and getting quite abusive (about 8 years back now), but it wasn't nice and I wouldn't really enjoy bumping into him. He was always getting visits from the police and being reported for a number of different things.

Tolerate his behaviour!!!????

You are an idiot. He lives right near a primary school and has been abusive to my wife. Are we to wait for him to do something worse? You wouldn't be saying that if he was living round your way.

I have known Martin for 30 odd years and yes he is mentally ill, but seeing him as he is nowadays perhaps being commited is the kindest thing to do to him.

Cutleroc would lock him away. Perhaps I am an idiot. Perhaps he should be locked away. Where would we lock him away Cutleroc? Prison or Broadmoor or where? I certainly wouldn't want him anywhere near me, that's for sure. I know what he is capable of and I agree that he will only get worse. However, the government decided on care in the community, not me.
