AN end is in sight to the traffic delays in Lexden.

Queues have built up along Lexden Road and London Road as work is carried out to replace ageing gas mains pipes.

But a spokeswoman for National Grid, which is carried out the work, said it should be finished by Monday.

The programme of works began three weeks ago and involves replacing metal mains pipes with plastic ones. The new durable pipes will have a lifespan of about 80 years.

The spokeswoman added: "It was always part of the plan to move on to London Road. The activity appears to be extensive - that is because the main is two metres below the ground, deeper than the main in Lexden Road.

"We have extra labour in the area."

Traffic queues have built up at the temporary traffic lights positioned near the traffic lights at the junction of Straight Road and London Road.

The spokeswoman said: "We appreciate the work does cause some disruption but it is vital work to improve gas supplies."
