MP takes delegation to Whitehall over flytipping
A DELEGATION has met at Whitehall to lobby the Government over the problem of flytipping.
North Essex MP Bernard Jenkin has been calling for more to be done to track down flytippers - and remove the burden of cost of the clear-up from the victims.
Mr Jenkin wants the Environment Agency and local authorities to take responsibility for illegally dumped rubbish on private land.
The Environment Agency and local authorities currently have responsibility to clear up waste dumped on public land.
Mr Jenkin's Private Member's Bill calls for this responsibility to be extended to private property.
He argues it will encourage the bodies to act more diligently in clearing up dumped waste and in tracking down the culprits.
Mr Jenkin this week lead a delegation of representatives from the Country Land and Business Association, the National Farmers Union and the Countryside Alliance for talks with Joan Ruddock, Under Secretary of State for Waste in London.
The Government has said it will not support the bill but Mr Jenkin said the minister accepted flytipping was a major problem and more needed to be done to tackle it.
Mr Jenkin said: "Although I am disappointed that the Government still won't support my bill, it was a positive meeting with the minister.
"We have made her aware of the strength of feeling over this issue and I would urge her department and the Environment Agency to act with more urgency in tackling it.
"The Government needs to convince landowners who have been flytipped they are on their side, to help them as far as possible in removing the waste and, above all, in chasing and prosecuting the real criminals, the flytippers."

As the root cause of flytipping is the Landfill tax, then of course Government must take responsibility for the(foreseeable)"uni
ntended consequences".
