Colchester's Roman circus has achieved national recognition for its historic importance.
The circus - scene of chariot races nearly 2,000 years ago - has been granted scheduled ancient monument status, which means it has the highest level of protection available against damage or development.
The decision will help Colchester Council in its bid for £1 million of Heritage Lottery Funding to create a heritage attraction for the site.
Christopher Arnold, deputy leader of Colchester Council, said the heritage centre could form part of a trail depicting Roman life in Colchester and the town's rich history.
Design firms have been asked to come up with a building that will enable a section of the foundations of the circus grandstand to be exposed to public view, while protecting the fragile remains from the elements.
The new building will be between Circular Road North and Le Cateau Road.
