Volunteers at Colchester Foodbank say they are "incredibly honoured" after receiving the highest honour for volunteers.

The King's Award for Voluntary Service was presented by the Lord Lieutenant, Jennifer Tolhurst, as the foodbank hosted the ceremony.

The award is the equivalent to an MBE for volunteers and is awarded for life.

The foodbank has more than 240 volunteers spread across 11 locations in Colchester.

Volunteers from the foodbank said: "Our hearts swelled with pride as we had the privilege of hosting the King's Award Presentation for Voluntary Service.

"We are incredibly honoured to be among the very first volunteers to receive the King's Award for Voluntary Service.

"The highlight of the event was when HM Lord Lieutenant Jennifer Tolhurst personally presented us with the King's Award crystal and certificate, signed by the King himself."

The foodbank said of its volunteers: "This recognition serves as a testament to the incredible efforts of our volunteers, whose unwavering dedication and selflessness have touched countless lives within our community.

"Their tireless efforts, without question and with complete dedication, have truly made a difference.

"They are the backbone of our foodbank, and it is with immense pride that we celebrate their achievements."

CVS Tendring nominated the foodbank for the prestigious award.

More than 60 dignitaries and VIPs were in attendance for the ceremony, which the foodbank said "added to the joyous atmosphere".

It added: "Together, we shared smiles and clinking glasses, marking an afternoon filled with warmth and camaraderie.

"It was a truly wonderful afternoon that will remain etched in everyone’s memories for years to come.

"As we reflect on the success of the event, we are reminded of the power of community and the importance of recognising the contributions of those who make a difference every day.

"Every second of our celebration on Friday was a tribute to these remarkable individuals who embody the spirit of service and compassion.

"Their commitment to making a positive impact is truly inspiring, and we are grateful for the opportunity to recognise and honour their contributions."

The foodbank thanked those who were in attendance and CVS Tendering for the nomination.
